What is kept, and for how long

Readers of this site are spread across at least seven legal regimes, from the UK and EU to California, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Naming all of them and promising to satisfy each would be a promise nobody could check. Instead this page states exactly what is stored and for how long, so you can hold it against whichever law covers you.

Your text

It is not stored. What is stored is a checksum of it, a short string of digits from which the text cannot be reconstructed. Its only job is to recognise a repeat request so the finished audio can be handed back instead of using the graphics card again.

The phonetic transcription is produced in memory and is not written to disk at all.

Audio files

Files generated for you are kept for 24 hours and then deleted by a scheduled job. The filename is the checksum, so nothing in it points back to you.

Anyone holding the exact link can fetch the file during those 24 hours. Do not put anything confidential through this site.

Your IP address

It is never stored in readable form. It is passed through a one-way hash with a secret value, and only the result is kept, purely to count how many requests came from one visitor. The limits are 5 seconds between requests and 60 requests a day.

The counter resets daily. There is no log of which texts came from which visitor, because the text is not stored.

Voices you upload

A recording of up to 2 MB, at most 5 voices a day from one IP address. The recording is used to build a voice and is then held so that the voice keeps working.

The voice gets a random code that is stored only in your own browser. There is no shared list, no page displays the code, and there is no route by which your voice could become public. If you clear your browser data or move to another computer, the voice is gone.

Pressing Delete removes the voice from this browser and tells the server to forget the recording. To be exact about the limit: the speech service holds an encrypted copy and currently has no deletion endpoint, so that copy cannot be confirmed as removed. This is stated rather than glossed over.

What is not collected

No account, no email address, no name, no advertising, no analytics from third parties, no social media buttons, no fonts loaded from someone else’s server. No script on this site comes from another company.

Asking about your data

Write to [email protected]. Be aware of what the answer will be: since text is not stored and addresses are hashed, there is usually nothing held that can be tied to you. The exception is a voice you uploaded, which can be deleted from this end.
